We at Go Geothermal Ltd believe so much in the Jaga DBE Range of radiators that one of our directors has installed them in his own property...!

 

Minstrels Barn in Caldwell, North Yorkshire, is a traditional barn that underwent a major refurbishment to convert it into to a comfortable living environment. Far from a simple project, the homeowners were very keen to install renewable technologies that would make the building sustainable for many years to come.

 

Sean Sowden, property owner and Co-Founder of Go Geothermal Ltd. – specialists in renewable heating technologies such as heat pumps – outlined how this ambition translated to the heating of the property: “Minstrel’s Barn was previously fueled by oil, which is extremely expensive and inefficient in large indoor spaces such as the barn,” he said. “We decided to install a ground source heat pump, supported by the use of solar thermal energy (to heat Domestic Hot Water and to pre heat the Glycol up to 20oC), and set ourselves the target of achieving the most efficient domestic closed loop ground source heat pump in the UK – with a coefficient of performance (COP) ratio of at least 6.5, which has been archived by enhancing the brine temperature from solar integration.”

 

 

“Given the heritage of the building, we had to ensure that we retained its character. As such, we needed a heating solution that could work effectively with a heat pump whilst accommodating the building’s defining features. For example, keeping the original oak floor in some rooms, as well as decorative floor tiling in others, meant that underfloor heating wasn’t an option. Low flow, energy efficient radiators became the ideal choice.”

In order to meet these objectives whilst ensuring the property was sufficiently warm, Mr Sowden specified 18 Low-H?O Jaga Strada DBE radiators to be installed throughout the home.

“We have sold Jaga radiators for a number of years now, so I am fully aware of what they are capable of, particularly with regards to their effectiveness with low flow systems such as a heat pump.” he explained.

 

 

Whereas the temperature of the water being circulated around the house had previously averaged at 65°C, with the introduction of the ground source heat pump the water generally circulates at between 30°C to 38°C, though can reach as high as 49°C if required. For most radiators, achieving adequate levels of comfort from such temperatures would be a real challenge, particularly given the large spaces within the property that needed to be heated.

However, the Strada DBE is designed to be entirely compatible with low flow temperatures and provide exceptional standards of comfort. The Dynamic Boost Effect (DBE) technology works through the use of small, quiet fans attached to the heat exchangers that draw air over the element to boost the Low-H?O radiator’s output by three times. As a result, the output, efficiency and responsiveness of the radiators are improved, and an extra boost of heat can be initiated as and when required.

 

 

This is combined with Jaga’s Low-H?O technology, which means the radiators require just a tenth of the water of a standard steel panelled equivalent, and help to reduce energy costs by as much as 16%.   

“Since the Jaga radiators have been installed, our energy bills have fallen significantly and the house is lovely and warm 24/7,” said Mr Sowden. “I really like the responsiveness of the radiators, which also turn off as soon as the desired temperature is reached so that there is no wasted heat. Furthermore, the low surface temperatures of the Strada’s casing make them entirely safe for the home scenario.”

 

 

“Jaga themselves were supportive throughout the entire project. They were able to visit the site for measurements and recommendations, and subsequently provide us with 18 Strada DBE radiators with different specifications in terms of height, length and output.”

“Ultimately, we couldn’t be happier with the end result.” concluded Mr Sowden.

Electrofusion Jointing

The Electrofusion jointing system has been around since the 1970’s and is the tried and tested jointing system for the Gas and Water Utilities installing Polyethylene pipes.

As per the Ground Source Heat Pump Associations Shallow Ground Source Standards all underground connections for Polyethylene pipes (PE100 and PE100-RC) should be welded joints. This means Electrofusion is the obvious joint of choice in Ground Source.

Whilst the jointing process is simple, there are basic important steps that must be followed.

The must have tools are:

  • Suitable Pipe Cutter
  • Suitable Pipe Scraper
  • Welding Wipes
  • Restraining Clamp

If you do not have these basic tools manufacturers of Electrofusion fittings, question the ability to make a satisfactory Electrofusion joint.

It is now accepted that even high specification heating systems  are only as efficient as the quality of water running through them. Many people invest in a high spec Heat Pump, Biomass Boiler or a Gas or Oil Boiler which could be used in a bi-valent system but are unaware that the efficiency of this technically advanced solution becomes threatened by the presence of dirt and air following installation.

Previously when considering the sewage needs of a new housing development the choice was functional rather than dual purpose and useful. With Thermpipe it's possible to turn an essential utility into an asset which both heats and cools your buildings. Used in multiple large scale projects in Europe the results are impressive and we are very keen to share this technology here in the UK.

Description

Besides offering a secure wastewater discharge, the PKS-Thermpipe®-System additionally provides potential customers the possibility of using thermal energy. As the output of thermal energy depends on various factors (volume and temperature of sewage, filling level in canal, etc.) the PKS-Thermpipe®-System also uses the surrounding soil of the pipeline zone for the energy supply. So the system is independent of daily hydrographs or irregular wastewater discharges.

The system (both static and thermal) is designed project-related and orientates itself at the structural conditions as well as the existing energy potential (sewage, thermal energy) and energy supply of the units to be supported. The biggest part of the used energy the system gets from the pipeline zone. The number of PKS-Thermpipes® depends on the necessary amount of energy and the abstraction capacities to be realised from the subsystems “sewage” and “pipeline zone”.

The PKS-Thermpipes® welded together will be connected to the FRANK PKS distribution shaft with standard form parts made of PE 100. From there lines lead to the heat pump in the building and to the energy transformation, so the existing heat from soil and sewage is used.

The Jaga DBE Radiator - Efficiency is the Key

Here at Go Geothermal we are always keen to embrace solutions to enhance the efficiency of Ground and Air Source so the JAGA Partnership was a logical step....

With a diverse range of solutions in almost every configuration JAGA stand out as the leader in their field of Low Temperature Emitters.

The key to the JAGA technology irrespective of the many aesthetically pleasing styles on offer is the lower thermal mass containing up to 90% less water than a steel panel radiator. Combine this with the ultra modern aluminium and copper heat exchanger (30 Year Guarantee) which is fully recyclable at the end of its life and the ability to offer measurable heat at only 28 DegC flow its a product of it's time.
As important is the fact that traditional radiators take 3 times longer to heat up and cool down much slower than the Jaga Radiators.  
 
The JAGA design drastically reduces wasteful overheating when the sun suddenly enters a room or more people enter a room for example. 
 
Offering far more freedom on retrofit and new build in terms of design options and space saving the range really does cater for all types of build.

Go Geothermal Ltd launch Biomass Fluids:

Here at Go Geothermal we are keen to advocate best practise in all renewable fields and Biomass is no exception.
 
Keeping within our ethos, our UK manufactured product range includes Fluids, Pre-insulated Pipe and RHI compliant Heat Meters ensuring all bases are covered from a brand that can be trusted.
 
Fluids
 
The importance of fluids within renewables is much overlooked and Biomass typically suffers from the same misconceptions around the need for correct application of fluids.
 
Factors to be considered when installing biomass include:
 
  • Is the system a new install or an upgrade?  Depending upon the answer the cleaning requirements & pre-commissioning fluids will be different.
 
  • Is the system so large/switched off for long periods so sterilisation fluids become necessary, i.e. doesn't reach pasteurisation temperature, as is sometimes the case.
 
We stock a complete range of UK manufactured Fluids for specific use within Biomass applications that will assist in maximising efficiencies.

Frank GMBH as a leading innovator have also improved the flow meters inside the chamber with a larger bore to ensure a more easily balanced system, less restriction of flow and the correct size for turbulent efficiency throughout the system.
 
What's more its always had a 110mm collector/distributor ensuring peace of mind on the header size & we believe is the biggest available as standard in the UK.

DHW Heating Controller
