The importance of Sanitiser & Biocide

In adopting “best practice” it is clear that many still do not see the importance in cleaning & sanitising the “Collector & Header Pipes” prior to filling and commissioning the system with the Heat Transfer Fluid.

To re-emphasise the point our key UK Based specialist fluid supplier “Sentinel” have issued the following example which clearly illustrates the potential pitfalls in not adopting “best practice”

When contacting Go Geothermal insist on R700 Sanitiser & Biocide!

Manifold Chamber System

To complement our already extensive Ground Source product range we now stock Circular Manifold Chamber Systems.

These come complete with isolation valves & flow meters on every flow/return port, 40mm spigot outlets for Collector Pipe and 63mm spigot outlets for the Header Pipe.

This product is becoming increasingly popular and will reduce installation time.

Simply place the Chamber in the pre-dug pit and join the Collector and Header pipes to the chamber by means of compression or electrofusion couplers.

Available from stock in 2 to 12 port configurations (Other options available on request)

Underfloor Heating

As an “Authorised Partner” of Rehau we have access to their Underfloor Heating product range which includes the popular universal “Everloc” fittings range.

We can even provide a full design service for the underfloor heating required for your building. This means for customers we can now offer a material solution for both outside and inside the building. All we need is the building plans and leave Go Geothermal to do the rest!

January Update

To help reduce demand on our ever decreasing Fossil Fuels and continually looking to utilise Renewable Energy resources Go Geothermal Ltd can offer a viable and economical alternative or supplement to conventional Central Heating or Air Conditioning systems "AWADUKT".

Utilising the Earth’s near constant subterranean temperature ventilation air is simply drawn through an underground system of pipes which pre-heat the air in the winter and pre-cool the air in the summer.

These Ground-air heat exchangers offer a simple and efficient method to reducing heating and cooling loads in both domestic and commercial applications.

Awadukt

GROUND-AIR HEAT EXCHANGER SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLED VENTILATION

Ever improving insulation and air tight construction of buildings means that controlled ventilation is becoming ever more important. The ground-air heat exchanger makes a considerable contribution to this, especially when used in conjunction with a heat recovery unit.

As well as increasing the quality of life within the building, this also provides significant energy
savings by using the embodied ground energy to pre-condition the incoming ventilation air.

The ground-air heat exchanger takes advantage of the fact that the temperature of the ground, 1.5 to 2m deep, remains a relative constant temperature between 7°C -12°C throughout the year.

The incoming air passes through an underground pipe system to pre-heat it in winter and to pre-cool in summer. Experience shows that a ground-air heat exchanger makes it possible to raise the temperature of air taken in by up to 9°K in winter, and to reduce it by up to 14°K.

AWADUKT Thermo Features and Benefits:

- Antimicrobial inner layer
AWADUKT Thermo pipes feature an inner layer unique amongst ground-sir heat exchanger pipes. This is achieved by a specialist process that incorporates silver particles into the inner layer of the base polymer. The result is that the fresh air inside the system is hygienic, containing virtually no germs.

- Solid Wall Polypropylene (PP) pipe
The optimised PP pipe with enhanced conductivity provides excellent heat transfer between the ground and the air, thereby ensuring a high degree of thermal efficiency.

- Radon-Proof
Radon is a natural, colourless, odourless radioactive inert gas encountered in rocks and in the ground. Radon diffuses through the ground, dissolves in water and escapes to the atmosphere at the ground surface.

- High longitudinal rigidity
The high longitudinal rigidity of AWADUKT Thermo pipes prevents sagging, so that condensation is safely discharged instead of forming puddles at the lowest points. Pipes with inadequate longitudinal rigidity are not to be recommended for ground-air heat exchangers.

- Inlet Units
Inlet units are also available, the air is passed into the ground-air heat exchanger through an air inlet tower. The air is filtered by either a course of fine filter to BS EN 779, eliminating dust and pollen.

Domestic Applications

1) Air Inlet Tower
With a range of filters (G4 or F6) for hygienic, dust and pollen free air supply.

2) AWADUKT Thermo Pipe System
- Solid walled PP pipe for optimised heat conductivity
- Antimicrobial inner layer to prevent microbial growth
- High longitudinal rigidity for reliable condensation discharge
- Radon-proof by virtue of special sealing system
- Wide range of fittings

3) Condensation discharge
This is installed towards the end of the system to remove any condensation formed during the heat transfer

4) Heat recovery unit

5) Distribution of fresh filtered air

6) Extraction of warm, stale air

7) Ring Seal

For a typical domestic application, a minimum of 40m of pipework is required. This is either with a loop around the building or by a meander pattern. The optimum pipe diameter for air flow rates of up to 300m3/h is 200mm. For air flow rates up to 450m3/h, DN250 pipe is used.

Commercial Applications

AWADUKT Thermo is also well suited to commercial applications, in particular in the health and education sectors. These buildings require a constant source of fresh, filtered air due to the high occupancy levels. Otherwise carbon dioxide build up can be a problem.

The cooling effects of the ground-air heat exchangers are of particular benefit to large buildings in summer. It is possible to achieve significant air conditioning energy savings and, in some cases, even remove the need for air-conditioning completely. A ground-air heat exchanger can in some cases supply 10% of a commercials building’s energy demand from on-site renewable sources. Pre-heating the ventilation air also provides significant cost savings on the heat recovery unit.

A large open area is normally required for commercial applications (e.g. a sports pitch is ideal). However, sometimes it may be beneficial to put the pipes under the foundations. It must be noted that this method does not allow for solar gain, which favourably increases the temperature of the ground, but still provides an effective solution and saves costs.

On commercial applications, it is usual to use a Tichelmann layout. This is a self-balancing system: whichever path the air flows, it travels the same distance, reducing the pressure losses.

Usually DN200-250 pipe is used for the heat transfer and DN 500, 800, 1000 or 1200 is used for the distribution pipe. The required air flow dictates the optimum pipe diameters.

October Update

At Go Geothermal we are continually striving to encourage “best practice” in the supply & installation of Ground Source products.  One of the many questions we are often asked is there a requirement for Marker Tape & Sanitizer/Biocides in Ground Source installations.   Outlined below are extracts from installation documents and manufacturers giving clear guidance advocating the use of these products.

Marker Tapes for use in Ground Source Applications

VDI4640 Document Extracts

Part 2 - Use of the shallow underground using horizontal ground heat exchangers (horizontal loops)

Part 4.2.2 – Earthworks – the use of Marker Tape

The loops can be arranged in individual trenches, in order to avoid a widespread destruction of the natural soil.  A further possibility is the widespread stripping of the underground for the loops.  To ensure that the pipes are not damaged they should be installed in a sand layer.  A warning tape must be laid approx. 30cm above the pipes.  Dependent upon the type of later surface area usage, the underground should be compacted in accordance with the general guidelines.

Adopting “best practice” the GSHPA will be issuing a document later this year detailing installation practice in which it will state that the use of Marker Tapes must be adopted in all horizontal ground loop installations.

Is £0.06 per metre worth compromising yourself and your clients...??

Go Geothermal stock both traceable and standard marker tapes

Sanitizer & Biocide for Heat Pump Systems

Although the life expectancy of a ground source heat pump is typically 20-25 years - without the correct water treatment the system will be liable to problems leading to costly call backs for the installer and householder.

For example, for new build applications, ground source arrays are installed during the ground work period when the foundations are laid.  These arrays are often filled with water or left while construction continues.  In these conditions, the water is stagnant and bacterial contamination or microbiological growth can quickly develop, having a negative effect on the efficiency of the system.  In the worst cases, this can lead to failure of the ground source heat pump within a few months if the bacteria contaminate the heat transfer fluid.

Protection is vital and Sanitizers/Biocides have been developed to clean and disinfect ground arrays from the potential damaging effects of bacterial slime and other contaminants before commissioning.

In addition, many installers are unaware of the danger of not dissolving heat pump fluids properly. If the heat transfer fluid isn't sufficiently dissolved, sections of water can be left unprotected, leading to corrosion, damaged pipe work and even pump failure if these sections of water, with no frost protection, come into contact with the heat pump.

Rather than just pouring the heat transfer fluid into the water it is mixed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions into a mixing machine and pumped through the system at the same time as the system water.

Installers can ensure the heat transfer fluid has been fully dissolved by using a Refractometer, which can determine the concentration levels. Easy to use, the installer simply opens the illuminator plate and places a drop or two of sample water onto the prism. One the plate is closed; the installer looks through the circular eyepiece to take a visual reading of the level of frost protection within the system. This reading can then be cross-referenced with manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure the system is fully protected.

The benefits of cleaning and protecting renewable technologies are likely to be further recognised in the revisions to Part L of the Building Regulations in 2010. In the proposed changes to the regulations when it comes to heat pumps, it states 'ground loops should be cleaned with a cleaning fluid and biocide as part of the commissioning process.'  So it is advisable that installers ensure best practice sooner rather than later.

RC Pipe

Further to our newsletter in July where we introduced the benefits of PE100-RC pipes (Resistance to crack)   Go Geothermal can now confirm we have stock available in 40mm SDR11 PE100 x 100 metre coils.

July Update

PE100 RC Pipe (Resistance to Crack)

A fundamental and critical component of any efficient performing Ground Source Heat Pump System are the collector pipes where pipe protection and longevity are paramount.

It's widely accepted in terms of good pipe laying practice that sand should be employed both below and above the pipe to protect from sharps as even PE100 Pipe Material is vulnerable to rapid creep if point load damage occurs.

Whilst sand does offer the potential for improved thermal conductivity in poor soils it has become the default position on most installs to lay a sand bedding as traditionally pipe needed protection from the variants of “as dug material” thereby always adding that cost into the job in material and significant labour time.

Go Geothermal Limited can offer you a solution, PE100 RC.  Offering low notch sensitivity and superior resistance to point loading and slow crack growth (SCG), the RC material avoids the potential for pipe tears even when point loads caused by rocks occur.

By utilising this pipe in the correct soil conditions NO sand back fill is required!  This reduces capital outlay and significant labour time and plant on site.

Go Geothermal are pleased to offer this product as yet another step in the improvement of the technical quality of Ground Source materials.

40mm Pipe coils up to 500m in length

Just in case you're not aware, we now stock 40mm coils right the way up to 400m in length (500m are available direct from the factory).  Coils of 300m and greater are the thinner walled variety (SDR17, 2.35mm, 10 bar rated).

Heat Transfer Fluids – Solar & Air Source

The fluids utilised in your Ground or Air Source unit are critical in the efficient operation of the system here at GG we not only stock the leading manufacturers we can advise of the benefits of the different brands including which brands are recommended by the respective HP manufacturers.

Solar fluid is also a product we are able to supply as more installs are integrating the different technologies using buffer tanks. This way the installer can be sure of the high quality that they already enjoy from GG on the solar fluid as well.

Chambers

With every GSHP installation criteria can be different on site; not all houses and gardens are the same.  Likewise commercial & public installs have their different challenges.

It's why when GG looked at housing the essential manifolds which are key to any efficient GSHP install we knew one solution would not suffice.  The Pre formed sealed Manifold Chamber has many functions and lends itself to a quicker install (time on site reduced) but it is restrictive in terms of options and height adjustment  for example.

Our quick assembly chamber has been very popular for over two years but as we are always listening to feedback from the market our products adapt accordingly.  To this end we are now stocking 2 chamber sizes which can be assembled simply without all the disadvantages of traditional brick & block.

The beauty of this method is that the chambers are built up in 150mm sections so can accommodate variable heights & multiple entry points for the collectors if needed. The design is also capable of far greater loadings if required as they are already proven in the M.O.D and Highway applications.

The two sizes stocked accommodate most installs but bespoke sizes are available on request.
